The Korean Experience by Jack Tan

The Korean Experience
I have signed up for the Korean Church experience about six months ago-included Irene 's name hoping she would come.We would visit Yoido Church in Seoul, the largest church in the world with nearly 850000 members. I have heard from Frank and Pastor Loh about this great church ,so when my church ,New Life organized a tour, I was determined to go-indeed, I was one of the first to sign up.
A week before the trip, doubts surfaced whether I would make it.Surprisingly,Irene reminded me about the briefing the Sunday before and she attended service and briefing with me- her very first sermon in my church .Must admit was a bit dumbfounded , anyway was glad she came to church. We departed via Airasia to Seoul on 14th night via Air Asia. I had booked premium seats(first time) so we could sleep and stayed fresh upon arrival in the early morning.Did not sleep that well though. All in, 40 members from New Life churches
came to experience this visit cum a seminar.
We arrived in the early morning on Saturday, 14Sept. Elder Jung and J C were there to greet us.Before long,we were on our way to a seolanggong breakfast of beef soup , rice and plenty of kimchi. We went on to see Yoido church, an impressive building with seven other adjoining buildings that cater the main sanctuary, medical centre, youth, world mission, education centers amongst them. After some photoshoots,we had lunch of ginseng chicken-a whole chicken for each person! By about 4 pm , we checked into the Youngsan Camp lodging right in the famous Onsari Prayer mountain, the biggest one in the world."Business" started almost immediately with a two hour preaching by the affable Pastor Kim on the core preaching of Yoido Church-the five gospels blessings.Quite interestingly and despite the tired bodies, all of us encompassed the events well. It was a good start to our Korean experience-Pastor Kim and Elder Jung have sparked off our enthusiasm and wanting more.....
We woke up early on Sunday and was told to wait for the bus at 0620 hours.Alas, the bus did not turned up . Instead, we walked about 1 km to have breakfast of noodles and soup. Coffee was free as we would find out in most restaurants.I volunteered to be a sweeper in order to assist Pastor Loh to expedite the people to board the bus punctually since by now we were running late for the first service.Everyone were in good spirits as I warmed them up further with a introduction of every body on board and sang a few songs. By faith ,we arrived in time for the first service. The sanctuary was quickly filled up by 9am for the sermon to be given by Pastor Lee, the presiding leader in place of founder Dr. David Cho Yonggi. A grand sight of nearly 12000 audience, a 100 pieces orchestra and choir singers awaited us.The service was in Korean and have seven language translations.I enjoyed the workship hymns that were sang with a live orchestra, the sermon and everything else conducted orderly., Later, we were to attend a briefing of the church history of 54 years (started in 1958). The Gospel and Christ is very much alive in Yoido and the Lord have granted many favors to the Christians- a central complex as the main church named the Sanctuary, theOnsari Prayer Mountain that can accommodate more than 20000 people's, two universities,a living skills village, a newspaper company amongst others.Lunch of vegetables stew and rice was quickly consumed before we headed for the second service by the founder himself, Dr David Cho.Another and lively sermon.Later in the afternoon, we managed to enjoy an hour in Yoido park, easy strolling and the weather was a cool 21 degree. An impromptu exercise session at the basketball court recharged our batteries before we headed for dinner.Elder Jung have organized a BBQ duck for us to sample, Korean style. By now, we were used to sitting on the floors for our meals. We went to E market next to buy some provisions -wow, as soon as the group were set loose, it was like shopping for a week 's of foodstuffs! On the way back, I managed to coax Madam Chan Kam Sing, the oldest member at 77 years to sing us a Hokkien song "Jesus is Good". Praise the Lord for a beautiful Sunday.
The seminars on the the core of Yoido Church teachings went full steam starting Monday till Wednesday. The core topics on the Fivefold Gospels, Threefold Blessings and the Fourth Dimension were taught by highly qualified pastors of Theology-Pastor Kim, Lee ,Yun and Shin. All of them hold doctorates in Theology(Study in Bible) and they translated and transferred their best knowledge of the Bible and the Yoido way of preaching. In the three days, I have understood the Bible more than my five years in my church! So indepth and clear were the teachings, many yearned for more, especially of the affable Pastor Kim.Who say studying the Bible is dull and boring. The seminars have given me a conviction to read and pray more. I was baptised in the Holy Spirit on Monday! Hallelujah !
The Holy Spirit is a very important fundamental part of Christianity in the modern world. It is through the Holy Spirit that we are. guided to pray, have faith and fend off temptations( devil). When Jesus ascended to heaven, he left behind the Holy Spirit as our Living God so that human beings can continue to receive blessings, witness miracles of healings and happenings.Without the Holy Spirit in us, one can be cursed, sinful and be attacked by the Devil. now, nobody told me that before...never too late! The miracles would be immediate for me to experience, for my lovely wife, Irene, accepted Jesus on Wednesday, very much to my pleasant surprise. It was one of the happiest moment of my life.Later on, we would hear her amazing testimonies...
That evening ,we checked out of Youngsan Camp and settled in Seoul for a night. We prayed together for the first time and God rewarded us with a sumptuous dinner of Korean BBQ beef. Our journey back home was smooth.I have never loved my wife more and all these happened in KOREA! In a week, our lives have changed for the better and we can enjoy the fruits that God prepare for every body- love, joy, peace , kindness, patience, truthfulness , goodness.By the Holy Spirit and accepting Christ as our Saviour,we gain the passport to Heaven!
Amen
